Poetry Evening with the Ambassador of the Republic of Austria to Kazakhstan — Wilhelm Kempel

As part of MNU’s 30th anniversary celebrations, a poetry evening was held with the participation of Wilhelm Kempel, Ambassador of Austria to Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan. The event brought together students and staff for poetry readings with improvised musical accompaniment. German was the main language, with English-speaking participants also joining the dialogue. The event fostered intercultural exchange and language practice, supporting SDG 4 through an enriched learning environment; SDG 10 and SDG 11 by promoting inclusion and campus cultural life; SDG 16 through dialogue and mutual respect; and SDG 17 by strengthening external partnerships. Results: expanded contacts with the embassy, greater student engagement, and increased interest in German-language literature. Next steps: publish a list of recommended works, organize mini-readings in student clubs, and develop joint cultural initiatives with partners.

MNU Summer School for International Students (Russian and Kazakh)

The university opened applications for a summer school in Russian and Kazakh for international students, professionals, and visitors to Astana. The program includes placement testing, a four-week speaking-focused intensive, and a variety of cultural and excursion activities. Study dates: 03–28 June 2024. The participation package—$2000—covers dormitory accommodation, meals, cultural and entertainment program, and airport transfer. The initiative supports SDG 4 by providing access to quality language education and SDG 10 by expanding inclusive opportunities for learners with diverse starting levels. Application deadline: 29 March 2024. Expected outcomes: a multilingual learning environment, strengthened intercultural communication, and increased student mobility. Next steps: confirm cohort placements and send participants an information pack with the timetable, housing rules, and cultural program.

International Conference “Impact Central: Bridging Social Development and Entrepreneurship in Central Asia”

On February 22–23, 2024, Nazarbayev University hosted the international conference “Impact Central: Bridging Social Development and Entrepreneurship in Central Asia.”

The conference brought together partner universities from across Central Asia, including the American University of Central Asia (AUCA), SDU, KIMEP, and Maqsut Narikbayev University (MNU).

More than 30 ISE MNU students took part in the event, presenting their research projects in the fields of sustainable development and corporate social responsibility. The project supervisor was Dr. Anjan Ghosh, Professor at Nazarbayev University and Visiting Professor at MNU, who teaches the undergraduate course “Introduction to Sustainable Development” as part of the universities’ partnership.

According to the jury, the best student projects were:
• Empowering Tomorrow’s Leaders: Teach for Qazaqstan’s Social Impact Journey by Gulkanat Mukhitova
• Empowering Communities: BI Group’s Contribution through IQanat High School of Burabay by Temirbulatova Dilnaza, Zhansultanova Alsu, Yekhsan Ayagoz, Shamratkyzy Assel
• Air Astana’s Sustainable Development Approach by Assel Amangeldi, Marpiya Kabdrashitova, Naziya Kospanova

Open Talk with the Dean of SLA

The Dean of the School of Liberal Arts held an open forum with students on academics, internships, and campus life. The Q&A format ensured a direct feedback channel and transparency in decision-making. Contribution to SDGs: improving the educational environment (SDG 4) and ensuring equal access to information and support (SDG 10). Results: proposals were gathered to improve timetabling and services, and routes were mapped for handling individual cases. Next steps: publish a brief report and launch mini-surveys on priority topics.

Lecture “How to Distinguish a Psychologist from a Pseudopsychologist”

The Department of Psychology hosted a public lecture on the criteria of scientific practice in psychology and how to recognize unreliable approaches. Topics included evidence standards, counseling ethics, and consumer protection mechanisms. This directly supports mental well-being (SDG 3) and education quality (SDG 4), as well as equal access to reliable information (SDG 10). Results: students received a checklist for evaluating sources and a protocol for seeking professional help. Planned follow-ups include case-analysis practicums and joint sessions with the university counseling center.

Photo Essay Contest “Özgeshe Perspektiva” (“A Different Perspective”)

The Department of General Education held a photo essay contest on the accessibility of urban and campus environments. Participants presented visual stories about barriers and inclusive practices, followed by an exhibition and discussion with experts. The event supports civic awareness and critical thinking (SDG 4), promotes inclusion (SDG 10), and advances sustainable urban environments (SDG 11). Outcomes: top works were selected for display on university platforms, and proposals were collected to improve wayfinding and shared spaces. Next steps include forwarding proposals to relevant units and organizing a joint workshop with campus services.

Provost and Dean’s List: Recognizing Academic Achievement

The university finalized semester results and announced the Provost’s and Dean’s Lists. A ceremony honored students with high academic performance and sustained progress. Public recognition strengthens academic motivation and fosters a culture of quality and equal access to success regardless of socioeconomic background (SDG 4, SDG 10). Results: selection criteria and the appeals procedure were updated, and a set of mentoring activities for junior students was formed. Next steps include publishing tips on academic time management and hosting a series of open mini-workshops by student mentors.
