This longstanding gathering brought together more than one hundred alumni, providing a venue for professional exchange and intergenerational dialogue. During Alumni Impact Day, several graduates spoke about their career paths, shared practical advice, and reflected on their student years, emphasising the role the University played in their personal and professional growth. The participants were congratulated by Talgat Narikbayev, Chair of the Executive Board of MNU, who thanked them for their continued support and highlighted the importance of alumni contributions to national development. A highlight of the event was the presentation of special awards in various categories acknowledging graduates’ social impact, professional influence, and achievements across different fields.

“The impressions are incredible; it felt as if I had travelled back twenty years. I appreciate this spirit of continuity, when former students who have devoted so many years to the University come back and share their experience. I wish current students to pursue their goals and remain true to their principles,” said Zhanna Urazbakhova, lawyer of the Almaty City Bar Association and MNU alumna.

It should be noted that the participants also announced the establishment of a scholarship in memory of alumnus Ainar Ilyassov.

This event, which has become a significant tradition within the university’s culture, brought together more than 500 participants. Runners completed distances of 3.5 and 10 kilometres. Additionally, a 400-metre relay race was held for children.

“The marathon is an important event that unites our community. We gathered today to support our student. Not only students, but also adults and children took part in the race. This reflects the spirit of the university — a spirit of unity. I believe this event should be held annually,” said Christopher Campbell-Holt, Chairman of the Board of Trustees at Maqsut Narikbayev University.

The MNU Marathon was held for the third consecutive year. Funds raised during the event have previously supported students facing serious medical conditions. Notably, Sabina Sayranova and Yeldar Qarmysuly received assistance through this initiative and are now successfully continuing their studies at Maqsut Narikbayev University.

“I serve in the naval forces of Kazakhstan in Aktau, and while on leave in the capital, I decided to participate in the marathon. As a charitable initiative, I believe many of us are always pleased to support such causes. Running 10 kilometres was not particularly difficult, as I have been training for a year. I finished in second place today, and I dedicate this achievement to my coaches,” said participant Azimkhan Amirkhanov.

It is worth noting that marathon winners received commemorative medals and gifts provided by the event’s partners. The event was organised by the Endowment MNU corporate foundation with the support of the Akimat of Astana, the Astana Triathlon Federation, and Akan Building construction company. The foundation collaborates with the business community, alumni, and institutional donors to promote research development, ensure inclusion in higher education, and provide comprehensive support to MNU students.

Today, Maqsut Narikbayev University hosted an open lecture by Didar Karimsakov, Chairman of the Management Board of Qazaqstan Investment Corporation (QIC), a distinguished financier and proud MNU alumnus who has made a significant contribution to the country’s economy and investment sector.

Drawing on his extensive leadership experience, the speaker shared insights with students on current trends in venture capital, investment strategies, and startup evaluation. He also offered valuable professional advice and practical tips.

In addition, Mr. Karimsakov conducted a hands-on masterclass on how to confidently and effectively pitch a business idea to investors.
“Clear, concise messaging, deep analysis, and confidence – are the key tools for gaining investor trust,” he emphasized.

At the end of the lecture, Mr. Karimsakov announced a student competition. Participants are invited to create a 3-minute video pitch on the topic “Why should I invest in Kazakhstan?”

The theme of the competition – analyzing legal risks and ensuring legal protection in the process of business acquisition in Kazakhstan – required participants to demonstrate in-depth legal knowledge, strategic thinking, and the ability to justify legal decisions within the context of modern Kazakhstani practice.

Mr. Arman Berdalin personally reviewed each case, provided expert feedback, and inspired students with his sincere engagement. He then officially announced the winner and awarded the main prize a certificate worth 500,000 tenge to Temirlan Abdullin, a third-year student at the MNU Law School.

Temirlan is more than just a successful student. He has participated in the AIFC Moot Court, Tukulov Moot, and various international arbitration competitions. At home, he is a caring older brother to two sisters and a younger brother and devoted son. At university, he is a talented, ambitious, and principled young man, truly seen as a future leader in the legal field of Kazakhstan.

This year’s marathon is dedicated to Yersultan Boribek, a first-year student at the MNU Law School, who has been undergoing treatment for the past three months.

Each year, the MNU MARATHON supports students in need. In 2023, the Run for Sabina helped Sabina return to university and continue her studies. In 2024, the Run for Yeldar provided assistance to Yeldar, who is currently in rehabilitation and set to receive his law degree next month.

The race will take place on May 24 at 07:30 in Triathlon Park, Astana. Participants can choose from the following distances: 400 meters (children’s relay), 3 km, 5 km or 10 km.

The Astana Triathlon Federation is the official partner of the project, while The Akan Building is the general sponsor.

Maqsut Narikbayev University hosted a guest lecture on Navigating Arbitration Across Eurasian Borders with Thomas Krümmel, Chairman of the International Arbitration Centre (IAC). The session was moderated by Christopher Campbell-Holt, a member of the MNU Board of Trustees.

During the lecture, Mr. Krümmel shared his extensive experience at the International Arbitration Centre and introduced students to the various opportunities the IAC offers for young professionals. He highlighted the significance of arbitration as an efficient mechanism for resolving international disputes and emphasised the centre’s role in ensuring fair and transparent conflict resolution.

A key focus of the lecture was international cooperation. Mr. Krümmel discussed the IAC’s partnerships not only with Maqsut Narikbayev University, but also with leading international organisations in the fields of international law and arbitration. These collaborations provide students with valuable knowledge and hands-on experience in arbitration proceedings.

“In 2025, within the first three months—though not yet fully expired—the IAC has completed 115 cases, including 74 mediation settlements and 22 arbitration warrants. In total, throughout the history of the IAC, this institution has overseen 758 arbitration awards and completed 2,598 mediation cases. Just imagine the extensive mediation discussions that have taken place across these 2,598 cases—all the hearings, written statements, and the dedicated efforts of arbitrators and the IAC in handling 758 arbitration cases. To be more on the topic of sailing across Eurasian borders, we have established 137 memoranda of understanding—not only at the national level with various institutions, including our partnership with the university, but also regionally with entities across Central Asia and the broader Eurasian region, as well as internationally, including partnerships in China and other parts of the world,” -said Thomas Krümmel, Chairman of the IAC.

During the session, Christopher Campbell-Holt announced an exclusive internship opportunity at the International Arbitration Centre, providing students with hands-on experience in arbitration. He also introduced an upcoming training programme, open not only to law students but also to students of other majors. This training will equip participants with a deeper understanding of arbitration fundamentals and its significance in international legal practice.

“We will give you uniquely top-quality training. This comes from the Centre for Effective Dispute Resolution in London, one of the world’s greatest leaders in the training and development of mediators worldwide. The best arbitrators, the best mediators, often hold an accredited qualification from CEDR in London. We are going to provide it free of charge through a special MNU programme,”- announced Christopher Campbell-Holt, MNU Board of Trustees member.

His recognition underscored the importance of such initiatives in nurturing the next generation of leaders and diplomats in Kazakhstan.

This event was made possible thanks to the steadfast support of the UN Resident Coordinator’s Office, which fully endorsed the student-led initiative. Participants were given a unique opportunity to engage with the real-world processes of international diplomacy and decision-making.

During these 11 months, I gained not only invaluable experience, but also felt the support and trust of my colleagues and supervisors. Moreover, I got to know different processes from working with akimats to introducing projects and improved my analytical and organisational skills.
