MNU Students Invited to Participate in an Exchange Programme

Maqsut Narikbayev University announces the opening of applications for participation in the academic mobility competition for the autumn semester of the 2026–2027 academic year. Students will have the opportunity to spend a semester at partner universities in China, Germany, France, Turkey, South Korea, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Denmark, Spain, Lithuania, Poland, Indonesia and Georgia.

The competition is open to undergraduate students who have completed at least 60 ECTS credits, as well as to master’s and doctoral students.

Eligibility Criteria:
• GPA – not less than 2.5; for Erasmus+ – not less than 3.0
• English proficiency – minimum level B2

Application Deadline: 24 February 2026

Applications and required documents must be submitted via the Smart MNU web version and additionally provided in electronic format to Office №220 (on a USB flash drive).

• Student application in the prescribed form (download);
• Scanned copy of the passport;
• Transcript of records for the current academic year (in Russian and English);
• English language certificate (IELTS, TOEFL, Cambridge English, Duolingo). Countries requiring IELTS/TOEFL: Denmark, Germany, Belgium, the Republic of Korea.

Navigating Arbitration Across Eurasian Borders – Guest Lecture with Thomas Krümmel

Maqsut Narikbayev University hosted a guest lecture on Navigating Arbitration Across Eurasian Borders with Thomas Krümmel, Chairman of the International Arbitration Centre (IAC). The session was moderated by Christopher Campbell-Holt, a member of the MNU Board of Trustees.

During the lecture, Mr. Krümmel shared his extensive experience at the International Arbitration Centre and introduced students to the various opportunities the IAC offers for young professionals. He highlighted the significance of arbitration as an efficient mechanism for resolving international disputes and emphasised the centre’s role in ensuring fair and transparent conflict resolution.

A key focus of the lecture was international cooperation. Mr. Krümmel discussed the IAC’s partnerships not only with Maqsut Narikbayev University, but also with leading international organisations in the fields of international law and arbitration. These collaborations provide students with valuable knowledge and hands-on experience in arbitration proceedings.

“In 2025, within the first three months—though not yet fully expired—the IAC has completed 115 cases, including 74 mediation settlements and 22 arbitration warrants. In total, throughout the history of the IAC, this institution has overseen 758 arbitration awards and completed 2,598 mediation cases. Just imagine the extensive mediation discussions that have taken place across these 2,598 cases—all the hearings, written statements, and the dedicated efforts of arbitrators and the IAC in handling 758 arbitration cases. To be more on the topic of sailing across Eurasian borders, we have established 137 memoranda of understanding—not only at the national level with various institutions, including our partnership with the university, but also regionally with entities across Central Asia and the broader Eurasian region, as well as internationally, including partnerships in China and other parts of the world,” -said Thomas Krümmel, Chairman of the IAC.

During the session, Christopher Campbell-Holt announced an exclusive internship opportunity at the International Arbitration Centre, providing students with hands-on experience in arbitration. He also introduced an upcoming training programme, open not only to law students but also to students of other majors. This training will equip participants with a deeper understanding of arbitration fundamentals and its significance in international legal practice.

“We will give you uniquely top-quality training. This comes from the Centre for Effective Dispute Resolution in London, one of the world’s greatest leaders in the training and development of mediators worldwide. The best arbitrators, the best mediators, often hold an accredited qualification from CEDR in London. We are going to provide it free of charge through a special MNU programme,”- announced Christopher Campbell-Holt, MNU Board of Trustees member.

The guest lecture sparked great interest among students, serving as a valuable educational and professional platform for discussing current issues in international arbitration. Maqsut Narikbayev University continues to strengthen its ties with leading international organizations, fostering professional growth and career opportunities for its students.

MNU INITIATES COLLABORATION WITH LEADING SPANISH UNIVERSITIES

Maqsut Narikbayev University (MNU) has embarked on a partnership with the prestigious universities in the Kingdom of Spain. These agreements were formalised during the MNU Management’s working visit to Madrid and Barcelona.

The highlight of the visit was the signing of a memorandum of understanding with Spain’s oldest university, the University of Alcalá, established in 1499. This agreement outlines provisions for student and faculty exchanges, joint scientific research, and the development of dual-degree educational programmes. Currently, the University of Alcalá hosts over 30,000 students, offering a diverse array of programmes in social and natural sciences.

“The progress Maqsut Narikbayev University has made in its academic journey is truly remarkable—from outstanding academic standards and high-quality educational programmes to cutting-edge infrastructure and an exceptional team of researchers. We are honoured to launch cooperation across a wide range of academic and research initiatives,” stated Julio Cañero Serrano, Vice President for International Relations at the University of Alcalá.

Another significant milestone in strengthening academic ties between the two nations was the signing of a cooperation agreement between the MIND Analytics and Research Center (Maqsut Narikbayev Institute for Network and Development) and the Institute of Economics and International Relations at SEI-UAM of the Autonomous University of Madrid (Universidad Autónoma de Madrid). The institute specialises in Eurasian studies, with a particular focus on the member states of the Organisation of Turkic States. Recognised as Spain’s top-ranked university by both the QS World University Rankings and the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, the Autonomous University of Madrid plays a pivotal role in global academia.

“This marks a historic day for the Autonomous University of Madrid and our institute. We are entering our first partnership with a leading research center in Kazakhstan, opening new avenues of collaboration in Turkic world. We extend our gratitude to Maqsut Narikbayev University for this opportunity to jointly explore an extensive research agenda,” remarked Professor Jesús Gil from Universidad Autónoma de Madrid.

In addition, Maqsut Narikbayev University is expanding its academic portfolio with a new specialisation in sports management. The MNU Business School has signed a memorandum with the Johan Cruyff Institute, a globally renowned institution in sports and management education. Established in 1999 by football legend Johan Cruyff, the institute is a leader in training elite athletes and professionals in the sports industry. This partnership—the first of its kind in Kazakhstan—will introduce a dual-degree MBA in Sports Management programme and foster the joint development of specialised minors within MNU’s academic offerings.

“The signing of these memoranda not only opens new academic and research frontiers for us, but also reinforces MNU’s position as an international hub for educational and expert collaboration. We firmly believe that partnerships with Spain’s leading universities will elevate our students and faculty to a new level of global academic integration. We express our deep appreciation to the embassies of both nations for their support and commitment to strengthening academic ties,” stated Galymzhan Kudaibergenov, First Deputy Chairman of the Board at Maqsut Narikbayev University.

During the working visit, members of the MNU delegation also participated in expert discussions at CIDOB (Barcelona) and the Royal Elcano Institute (Madrid). Miras Zhienbayev, Head of the Foreign Policy and International Studies Programme at the MIND Analytics and Research Center, provided insights into Kazakhstan’s foreign policy. These discussions enabled Spanish analysts to gain a deeper understanding of Kazakhstan’s strategic role in international relations, its transit potential, and its broader geopolitical significance.

One of Maqsut Narikbayev University’s core strategic objectives is fostering internationalisation in education, research, and academic exchange. Currently, MNU collaborates with over 100 global partners, further strengthening its international academic footprint.

MNU HOSTED WORLD BANK PRESENTATION ON KAZAKHSTAN ECONOMIC UPDATE 2025: FUNDING THE FUTURE

On february 4, 2025 MIND MNU, in cooperation with the World Bank, presented the Kazakhstan Economic Update 2025 report. The event featured a high-level discussion on fiscal policy, sustainable investment, and the latest analytical insights into Kazakhstan’s economy.

The annual report provided an overview of Kazakhstan’s economic developments, growth prospects, and policy challenges. The event was moderated by Natasha Sharma, Senior Economist in the Global Macroeconomics, Trade, and Investment Practice at the World Bank.

Andrei Mikhnev, World Bank Resident Representative in Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan, thanked Maqsut Narikbayev University for the opportunity to present the report and noted that the fiscal policy of Kazakhstan in 2025-2026 remains stimulative, accompanied by a significant budget deficit. Despite a manageable level of public debt, the growing reliance on domestic borrowing and the use of the National Fund to cover the budget deficit raises concerns about its long-term sustainability.

The World Bank report is traditionally an important source of analytical information used by the government, business community and academic sector for strategic decision-making. This year, special attention was paid to sustainable economic growth, investment policy and reforms aimed at improving the business climate in Kazakhstan.

Hosting lectures of this kind helps to improve students’ economic literacy and broadens their understanding of global and regional economic processes. Maqsut Narikbayev University continues to develop cooperation with leading international organizations, providing its students with the opportunity to communicate with world-class experts.

MNU HOSTED II ANNUAL MEDIA FORUM ON JOURNALISM AND ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

On December 5, the second annual Media Forum, organised by the European Delegation and the International School of Journalism, was held at MAQSUT NARIKBAYEV UNIVERSITY. The Forum’s topic was: Enhancing Journalism: Navigating the Intersection of Artificial Intelligence and Information Manipulation. Talgat Narikbayev, Chairman of the Board of Maqsut Narikbayev University, delivered a welcoming speech, highlighting the importance of journalism ethics in establishing a transparent society:

“The topics of this forum align with our belief that informed and ethical journalism is essential for a healthy and transparent society. We are convinced that advancing journalistic practices and countering misinformation are critical steps toward fostering public trust and protecting democratic values”, — he said.

Panel sessions

In the first panel session, speakers Martyna Bildziukiewicz, Linas Skirius, Karla Jamankulova and Assel Kozhakova discussed the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in spreading disinformation and highlighted the controversial results of using AI in journalism. Although AI provides tools to counter disinformation, its use is accompanied by ethical and operational challenges. The speakers emphasised that cooperation between industries is a prerequisite for building sustainable communities resistant to manipulation and misinformation. Meanwhile, journalists and fact-checkers remain the backbone of robust information ecosystems, whereas new technologies must be implemented in accordance with the highest ethical standards.

During the second panel session, experts discussed the impact of AI on the work of a journalist. Thomas Regnier, Sylwia Czubkowska, Gulmira Brimzhanova and Duman Smakov participated in the discussion, focusing on the benefits and risks of using AI in journalism. Additionally, they discussed the ways of adapting media to the new technological realities.

As part of the Forum, the European Delegation and MNU held a collaborative exhibition. This project featured images created using AI and involved a wide range of participants: A Digital Content Author, Bakdaulet Bekzhanov, MNU students and EU embassies.

The two training sessions became the significant part of the event. The first session was dedicated to the ways of dealing with contemporary information manipulation. It was conducted by Linas Skirius, Co-founder of the Civil Resilience (CR) Initiative and a trainer for media. The training focused on the role of modern researchers and how AI and open source tools are transforming approaches to countering disinformation. Participants learned about the latest AI solutions that help fact-checkers verify news, images, and videos.

The second training was conducted by Vitali Ruhain, Head of Innovation at Free Press for Eastern Europe, journalist, editor, SMM specialist and AI application expert for editorial offices. Participants discussed the ways AI can improve the efficiency of journalists’ work and make their content more impressive and engaging. The speaker also outlined important aspects of collaborating with AI, such as the opportunities and limitations this technology provides for the media.

At the end of the forum, the Ambassador of the European Union to the Republic of Kazakhstan, Aleška Simkić, delivered a speech. She noted that at the moment, the EU’s priority is to combat the spread of disinformation and humanity must continue to advance technologies despite the challenges. The Ambassador expressed her gratitude to Talgat Narikbayev and the International School of Journalism for their assistance in organising the event and presented diplomas and gifts.

We would also like to remind you that in 2023, the MNU International School of Journalism was opened jointly with the TV and Radio Complex of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Currently, the School trains future journalists in two educational programmes: International Journalism and Analytics and Investigation. The main feature of the School is its practice-oriented approach, which allows students to have access to professional equipment and recording studios from the 1st year of study.
