Kazakhstan made a tremendous contribution to the victory in the Great Patriotic War. Every fifth citizen of the country went to the front, and more than 600,000 of them were killed or went missing in action. For their courage and heroism in battle, hundreds of thousands of Kazakhstanis were awarded orders and medals, while around 500 people became Heroes of the Soviet Union.
