Maqsut Narikbayev University hosted a discussion on the development of critical minerals in Central Asia. The workshop brought together leading experts in the field.
The event was organized by the Center for Global and Regional Governance (CEGREG) at MNU in collaboration with the Groningen Research Institute for the Study of Culture (Netherlands) and the analytical center MIND. The platform convened representatives of government bodies, academia, and industry experts to discuss the region’s growing role in the global economy. Participants emphasized the increasing strategic importance of Central Asia amid rising global demand for resources and ongoing transformations in the world economy.
During the workshop, experts exchanged views on public policy, connectivity and security, geoeconomics, and legal regulation. Special attention was given to the development of the critical minerals sector in Kazakhstan, the country’s role as a transit hub, and the competition among global powers for access to resources. Participants also highlighted the impact of the energy transition on the reconfiguration of supply chains and stressed the need for a balanced policy that takes into account national interests and the principles of sustainable development.
