ISJ Open Talks: The Inside of the Media Industry

The International School of Journalism opens up new horizons for those seeking professional growth and aiming to be at the heart of modern media trends. As part of the ISJ Open Talks initiative, a series of informal Q&A lectures with global media trainers has been launched, offering aspiring journalists a unique opportunity to learn from the experience of leading industry experts.

The first guest in the series was the renowned journalist Sergio Cantone, who shared insights into his journey in journalism. According to him, he chose this profession due to his passion for travel, engaging communication, and a genuine curiosity about the world. It has always been important for him to talk to people, ask questions, and seek the truth.

Sergio Cantone is an international correspondent and political analyst with extensive experience in the world’s leading media. He is a reporter for Euronews, specialising in global political processes, international conflicts, and diplomatic relations. Throughout his career, he has covered major events in Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa. His reports are distinguished by a deeply analytical approach and exclusive interviews with political leaders.

“One of the first important things for a journalist is to be open to new experiences. Even if it is difficult, you have to try,” Cantone said. He also addressed challenging ethical dilemmas when covering international conflicts. In his view, it is not always necessary to depict people’s suffering directly—you can find alternative ways to convey the tragedy and its consequences.

During his career, Sergio Cantone has interviewed numerous prominent figures, including Muammar Gaddafi and other key political personalities. His experience in engaging with influential global figures served as an inspiration and an example for the participants of ISJ Open Talks.

The International School of Journalism also hosted a three-day training session featuring leading media industry experts. The programme covered the following topics: “TV and Live Performance: Live Broadcasts, On-Air Presence, and Professional Standards in Television.” As part of the training, students honed their skills in front of the camera, learned how to conduct themselves during live broadcasts, and mastered the intricacies of interviewing. The third day of the training focused on the art of interviewing and the techniques of public speaking on camera.

ISJ Open Talks provides a unique opportunity for students and young journalists to gain behind-the-scenes insight into the profession, acquire invaluable knowledge from distinguished experts, and develop an understanding of what it means to be a modern journalist. The series of meetings will continue, promising many more engaging conversations with the world’s leading media professionals.
