Presidential Ball of MNU Held in Astana

The 12th Presidential Ball of Maqsut Narikbayev University was held in the capital. The ceremonial event took place at the Kazakh National Musical and Drama Theater named after Kalibek Kuanyshbaev.

One of the university’s flagship events this year brought together around 500 attendees. The program was rich and diverse: participants performed a classical polonaise and a majestic Kazakh waltz. In addition, the ball’s debutants invited their parents and guests to dance, sharing this special moment with them.

“The Presidential Ball holds special significance for us. This event is dedicated to the birthday of our Honorary Rector, Maksut Sultanovich Narikbayev — an outstanding statesman and public figure after whom our university is named. Through such traditions, we strive to instill in our students cultural values, respect for heritage, and continuity between generations,” noted MNU Provost Anar Ibrayeva.

The highlight of the evening was the long-awaited crowning of the ball’s King and Queen. This year, the competition took on a particularly spectacular format: seven finalist couples presented unique performances inspired by world cinema and fairy tales. The audience enjoyed vivid interpretations of Pirates of the Caribbean, Coco, Aladdin, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, and other well-known works, with each performance blending choreography and artistry.

I have been involved in organizing the Presidential Ball for the fourth year and truly value our collaboration with MNU. It is important for me to introduce students to the arts. I would also like to highlight that the program always includes the Kazakh waltz, as it allows students to connect with the culture of the people, its character, and respect for traditions,” emphasized Yevgeny Moiseyev, Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Choreography at the Kazakh National Academy of Choreography.

This year, the Presidential Ball set a record, with 132 debutants taking the stage. By decision of the jury, the titles of King and Queen were awarded to third-year students Sherkhan Salmenov and Arailym Alzhapparova. In addition, students Muhammadjon Islombekov and Nurai Mustafa received a special prize from the Chairman of the University’s Management Board.

“We were inspired by the story of Aladdin and Jasmine and decided to convey it through dance. Over four weeks of preparation, drawing on our experience in the student organization ‘The Mobtrix,’ we aimed to create an emotional story that would be clear to the audience. The competition among the seven couples was very strong, so the victory came as an unexpected and incredibly pleasant surprise,” said MNU student Sherkhan Salmenov.

It is worth noting that the Presidential Ball serves as a platform where students develop stage culture, discipline, and the ability to work in pairs. The project continues to gain popularity each year, securing its place in the cultural life of the capital.
