«6В02301 – Translation Studies»

The programme is aimed at training specialists with skills in professional translation, consecutive and simultaneous interpretation, in-depth knowledge of the theory and practice of the first and second foreign languages in different language environments, and skills in the use of computer-aided translation tools and translation memory (CAT tools).

The Bachelor’s programme in Translation Studies is based on international standards and focuses on local resources. When developing the programme, the requirements of the State Educational Standards of the Republic of Kazakhstan, as well as the requirements of the modern market and employers were taken into account.

A graduate of the Translation Studies program will have the following knowledge and skills necessary for a successful professional career in translation, consecutive and simultaneous interpreting:
• Apply the theoretical foundations of lexicology, grammar, phonetics, stylistics, history of English and other areas of linguistics to translate and interpret;
• demonstrate professional consecutive and simultaneous interpreting skills;
• Apply various technical means and technologies for translation and interpretation;
• Apply knowledge of research methods to research projects in translation and linguistics;
• Apply effective communication skills in multicultural and multilingual environments in both English and a second foreign language;
• express their thoughts, ideas and beliefs in an audience-, context-, purpose- and style-specific manner;
• Use databases to find reliable sources of information;
• follow the professional ethics of a translator;
• demonstrate interdisciplinary skills and knowledge in foreign language teaching and media linguistics.

Programme structure

The Translation Programme was presented at the Advisory Board for School of Liberal Arts, which includes representatives of the Association of Translators and Translation Agencies of Kazakhstan.

More than 70% of the programme focuses on theoretical and practical language training and translation practice.

The programme is presented in two forms of study, full-time (4 years) and shortened (3 years). To complete the degree in 4 years, a student must complete 248 academic credits. This form of education is provided for those entering on the basis of secondary education.

Those entering after college (on the basis of secondary vocational education) have the opportunity to complete their studies in 3 years, having mastered 192 academic credits.

All students on the programme have the opportunity to create their own individual study plan. A detailed course programme is available for consultation in the catalogue of the SLA.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this programme graduates will be able to:

      • demonstrate knowledge and understanding of language theory and linguistics of native and foreign languages, using it in a variety of different types of work;
      • Apply translation and interpretation strategies and techniques in practice;
      • Develop critical thinking and broad-spectrum skills in a manufacturing environment;
      • have professional skills in English as a first foreign language and in Chinese, German, French, Italian and Spanish as a second foreign language;
      • demonstrate knowledge of traditions, culture, history, literature of the countries of the learnt languages (English and the second foreign language);
      • demonstrate interdisciplinary and communication skills, drawing on knowledge of economics, psychology, politics and other fields;
      • express and justify their decisions, analyse situations that arise;
      • Identify further goals and ways to achieve them.
