Donation Policy
What is a donation? When can MNU decline a donation? Below are some principles, policies and guidelines related to accepting donations at MNU.
Common Principles
Endowment MNU and the entire university community works to encourage and assist donors to support the university's mission of teaching and enhancing research, and to ensure that all donations fulfill their purpose.
A donation is any item of value given to MNU by a donor who expects nothing of value in return other than recognition (e.g., mention on an honor roll or naming of a physical space, foundation, or professorship).
In some cases, especially with institutional donors such as foundations and companies, the terms of the endowment may require support to be highlighted as a sponsored project. Endowment MNU always strives to customize contributor preferences. However, Endowment MNU reserves the right to refuse any proposed donation if
- the source of the donation was obtained through illegal or immoral means
- the proposed restrictions on the donation are unduly burdensome or may compromise the independence or integrity of the university's research or that of its employees
- there is risk of damage to MNU's reputation if the donation is accepted

Donation methods
i. Assets
Endowment MNU considers the acceptance of virtually any type of asset and conducts a review to determine if the asset is appropriate for acceptance.
Cash and openly traded stock
These are the easiest assets to accept. The focus will be on the number of shares of any openly traded stock in relation to the volume of daily trading in that stock
Real estate
Prior to acceptance of the property, a site inspection by a member of the University's real estate team or a hired agent will be conducted and encumbrances will be analyzed
Non-publicly traded securities
Based on the type, amount and other characteristics, an appropriate level of review of the stock and its related substance will be performed, including attention to the value of the securities, the underlying assets and operations, the potential for future liquidity opportunities and other factors
Other assets
This category includes tangible personal property (artwork, cars, antiques, etc.), cryptocurrencies, life insurance policies and business interests that are not in corporate form. Prior to accepting such an asset, appropriate due diligence will be conducted regarding its value, ongoing costs, risks, potential for liquidation, etc.
Independent business revenue
Endowment MNU carefully considers independent business income and will determine if it is related to any donation. The presence of independent business income, which may arise from donations with debt or from donating a large percentage of the business, will not necessarily result in a donation being declined, but it will be considered
ii. Donation Form
Below are donation methods to Endowment MNU. Each potential situation will be reviewed and factors such as value, type of asset, administrative costs, means of donation and terms of donation will be considered.
iii. Intention
Intentions from donors for specific amounts that are usually earmarked for a specific purpose by a specific date are welcomed and encouraged. The time frame for fulfilling a pledge can range from three to five years. Although will be encouraged if the donor fulfills the pledge earlier than the stated period of support. However, Endowment MNU does not treat the intent as a legal contract for the donor, the contributor fulfills the pledge at their discretion, which provides flexibility for the donor.
iv. Purposeful and non-purposeful donations
Contributions can be either purposeful (e.g. the contributor has chosen an animal support project). If the donation is not made for a specific purpose and is general in nature to support MNU, the funds will be used to replenish the Endowment MNU's main capital.
Purposeful
These donations will be used to implement projects offered by MNU. They are collected and marked for specific purposes (Project Portfolio)
Fixed capital
Donors can designate a donation to be placed in the MNU Endowment (replenishment of the main capital). Such donations are held in perpetuity “perpetual capitals” for the sustainable development of the university. The main capital can be effectively operated and multiplied, and only the income generated can be used for the needs of the university. Thus, the fixed capital should remain inviolable.
v. Other policies
i. Anonymity
Endowment MNU respects the donor's wish for anonymity. However, it requires at least the MNU Board Chair/First Vice Chair of the MNU Board to know the identity of the donor of an anonymous donation and the reason for the wish for anonymity in order to ensure that accepting the donation is appropriate.
ii. Using MNU's name or logo
MNU's marks and symbols, including its name, are owned by the university and are valuable assets of the university. A donation to the university does not grant the donor the right to use MNU's name or any of the following without the university's prior consent: the name of any faculty, staff or student or any trademark, service mark, trade name, logos, photographs or other symbols of MNU.
iii. Donations and acceptance
MNU has 40,0000 alumni and others interested in financially supporting students, faculty and programs. For three decades, children of current and potential donors have applied for admission to MNU as undergraduate, graduate, and undergraduate students and this practice is expected to continue in the future. It is important to realize that no one should donate with the expectation that it will influence a university's admission decision. The Admissions Office is independent, and donations cannot influence a candidate's admission to the university. MNU, as a founding member of the Academic Integrity League, adheres to the principle of “zero tolerance for corruption”.
iv. Academic independence
The academic independence and integrity of the university are critical to its mission. Donations and conditions on donations that may compromise the integrity, independence, accuracy, or autonomy of the work of the university and its students, faculty, or other researchers will not be accepted.
