We are pleased to announce the establishment of the ISE Committee for Scientific Research and the formal adoption of the ISE Research Ethics Policy. This significant step underscores our commitment to upholding the highest standards of ethical research practices. The newly adopted policy outlines the principles and norms for conducting ethical research, details the procedure for obtaining ethical approval, specifies potential violations of research ethics, and describes the types of sanctions and enforcement procedures for such violations.
Why This Policy Matters The ISE Research Ethics Policy is designed to support and guide both faculty and students in conducting research that aligns with international ethical standards. It ensures that our research practices reflect integrity, transparency, and respect for participants. By embedding these standards, we strengthen ISE’s position as a forward-thinking and research-intensive institution. This initiative is part of our broader strategy to enhance the School and University’s reputation as a leader in education and research in Kazakhstan.
Scope of the Policy This policy applies to all research projects conducted by students (e.g., graduation theses, PBL research projects, or other research involving original data collection and analysis) and faculty members at ISE. Ethical approval must be obtained from the Committee before starting any data collection or analysis involving human participants, experimentation, or non-anonymised data that is not publicly available.
Responsibilities and Exemptions Both students and faculty members are responsible for determining whether their research requires ethical approval or qualifies for an exemption. Students should seek guidance from their supervisors when making this determination. The policy includes specific exemptions, such as research involving data that is fully anonymised or publicly available, and observational studies conducted in public settings where participants expect to be observed.
Application Submission Process To apply for ethical approval, researchers should use one of the designated forms (Annex 1 for primary data collection and Annex 2 for secondary non-anonymised data analysis). Both forms are attached for your convenience. Completed applications should be submitted to the ISE Committee for Scientific Research at the following email: ise_science_committee@kazguu.kz
