Master class from the AIFC International Arbitration Center for Students, Undergraduates and Doctoral Students

On September 12, 2023, Maqsut Narikbayev University hosted a master class organized by the AIFC International Arbitration Centre for students, master’s, and doctoral candidates. The event featured Thomas Krümmel, Chairman of the AIFC International Arbitration Centre, with a presentation on “The Influence of Language and Legal Culture on Commercial Contracts”; Barbara Domann TC, the first Chairperson of the IAC and member of the AIFC panel of arbitrators, who delivered a talk on “How a Judge/Arbitrator Acts When Preparing a Judgment/Award in the English and Anglo-American Context”; and Professor Roman Melnik, Director of the Scientific School of Administrative and German Law, with a presentation on “‘Soft Law’ and Its Use in Judicial Reasoning.”

The master class enabled participants to gain a deeper understanding of the specifics of international arbitration, the differences between legal cultures, and the role of language in shaping legal reasoning.
