More than 150 undergraduate and graduate students from across the country competed for the title of the best debater. The annual MNU CUP 2026 tournament was held at Maqsut Narikbayev University.
The intellectual competition brought together 80 teams. Over the course of two days, participants competed in the British Parliamentary format, demonstrating their public speaking, argumentation, critical thinking, and leadership skills. For the first time, the tournament was organized across three language leagues.
“The MNU CUP platform is designed to help students develop decision-making skills, defend their positions, and maintain respect for opposing viewpoints. Debating plays a significant role in shaping professional competencies and a culture of reasoned dialogue. I am confident that participation in the tournament will be a valuable experience that will certainly benefit everyone in the future,” said MNU Provost Anar Ibrayeva.
According to the results of the competition, the top places were distributed among teams from three universities in the capital. Nazarbayev University became the champion in the Russian and English leagues, while the team of L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University took first place in the Kazakh league. Meanwhile, representatives of Maqsut Narikbayev University, together with representatives of L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University, became vice-champions in the Kazakh league, and also shared second and third places in the Russian league alongside students from Nazarbayev University.
“Debating is a school of life. I was also once a member of the debating community. The skills I acquired then became some of the defining factors of my success in my professional and public service career,” noted Mazhilis Deputy of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Askhat Aimagambetov.

During the tournament, MNU graduate Aiym Aitpanbet was appointed as the new President of the National Debate Federation. The winners, as well as the best speakers and judges, were awarded commemorative diplomas and cash certificates. A student of Astana Medical University, Aidana Zhanibekkyzy, highlighted the professionalism of the judging panel and the substantive quality of the tournament.
“The atmosphere of the tournament was truly special and emotionally engaging. The professionalism of the judges, original motions, and participation of the strongest teams made the debates highly engaging. We are grateful to MNU for creating a platform of such a high level, which gives young people the opportunity to fully realize their potential,” emphasized Aidana Zhanibekkyzy.
It should be noted that debate tournaments at the university have been held on a regular basis since 2003.
