Maqsut Narikbayev University will once again represent Kazakhstan at the annual Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition. The university’s students won the Kazakh league of the Central Asian round of the tournament.
The Central Asian round took place last week in the capital of Uzbekistan. For the first time, eight university teams competed in the Kazakh league, including Maqsut Narikbayev University, KIMEP University, Narxoz University, Nazarbayev University, Suleyman Demirel University, Al-Farabi University, Caspian University, and Turan University. Team MNU secured victory in the final round, outperforming competitors from Narxoz University.
The winning team included MNU Law School students Anel Sapargaliyeva, Dana Kumargazy, and Shynar Bayton. They earned the traditional trophy and the right to represent Kazakhstan in the international rounds of the competition, which will take place in the United States from March 28 to April 4 this year. Notably, this will mark MNU’s 24th participation in the competition.
The Jessup Cup is the world’s largest moot court competition for law students. Each year, approximately 2,000 students from more than 90 countries participate, simulating proceedings before the International Court of Justice. This year’s cases address issues including intervention in ICJ proceedings, indigenous peoples’ rights concerning rare earth minerals, the articulation of general principles of law recognized by civilized nations, and the immunity of state enterprises from the domestic jurisdiction of another state.
