Saule Kemelbayeva, Dean of the ISE, has published a new article on gender wage inequality in the The Indian Journal of Labour Economics (indexed in Scopus, Q2, Web of Science, ESCI).
The study’s findings contribute to advancing SDG 5: Gender Equality by offering evidence-based insights to guide policies that promote equal opportunities and eliminate gender-based disparities in Kazakhstan’s labor market. The research examines the gender wage gap in Kazakhstan from 2011 to 2019, which has remained persistently high at around 30%. Although women’s education and qualifications have improved, increasing industrial segregation continues to reinforce wage inequalities.
The study shows that the gender pay gap is widest in industrialized and economically advanced regions and lowest in poorer, agricultural areas. In the two largest cities, evidence also points to vertical segregation and workplace discrimination. The authors emphasize that policies aiming to reduce gender inequality should address industrial and regional disparities that perpetuate unequal opportunities for women.
