Maqsut Narikbayev University welcomed Pere Joan Pons, President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, who delivered a guest lecture during his visit to the university.
During the session, the speaker engaged with students and faculty on pressing issues such as climate change, international security, human rights, and the role of youth in shaping a sustainable future. Pere Joan Pons emphasized that climate change has a direct impact not only on the environment, but also on the economy, energy systems, social stability, and international relations. According to him, sustainable development is impossible without close cooperation among governments, the scientific community, civil society, and political institutions.
“Global security cannot be ensured without addressing climate change. It is no longer only an environmental issue, but also a political and economic reality. Your generation will make the decisions that determine what kind of world this will become—and whether we will manage to preserve it,” Pere Joan Pons noted.
The head of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly also stated that Kazakhstan is demonstrating a commitment to systemic environmental reforms and the development of international dialogue. Earlier this week, Pere Joan Pons was also received at the Akorda residence by Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.
