Fact-Checking Lecturer

International School of Journalism

The Fact-Checking Lecturer is responsible for developing students’ practical skills in information verification, source validation, identification of disinformation, and critical evaluation of content in today’s digital media environment. The course is delivered in English and incorporates modern digital verification tools and international journalism standards.

Key Responsibilities

• Deliver lectures, seminars, and practical classes in Fact-Checking in English;
• Teach students methods of information verification, data validation, and source credibility assessment;
• Develop students’ ability to identify disinformation, manipulation, and fake content;
• Develop and maintain course materials in Canvas, including course modules, learning resources, assessment criteria, and timely student feedback;
• Conduct consultations (Office Hours) and support students’ independent learning;
• Design practical case studies and assignments based on current challenges in the media landscape;
• Uphold the principles of academic integrity and ensure their implementation in the educational process;
• Participate in the continuous improvement of educational programmes and teaching materials.

Education Requirements

• Higher education in Journalism, Media Communications, International Journalism, Information Technology, or related fields;
• A Master’s degree is considered an advantage.

Professional Competencies

• Proficiency in modern digital content verification tools, including OSINT (Open Source Intelligence) methods;
• Skills in reverse image search, metadata analysis, and digital content verification;
• Knowledge of international fact-checking standards, media literacy, and journalistic ethics;
• Understanding of approaches to combating disinformation and manipulative technologies;
• Experience working with educational platforms, including Canvas.

Work Experience Requirements

• Practical experience as a fact-checker, journalist, investigative journalist, editor, or analyst;
• Experience applying digital verification tools in professional practice;
• Teaching experience and experience delivering courses in English will be an advantage.

Software Skills

• Proficiency in information search and verification tools;
• Advanced skills in using search engines and digital databases;
• Strong command of Microsoft Office applications;
• Experience with the Canvas Learning Management System or similar educational platforms.

Language Requirements

• Fluency in English at Advanced (C1) level or higher for teaching, preparing course materials, and interacting with students;
• Knowledge of Kazakh and/or Russian will be an advantage.
